While Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda were flops, and Dragon Age: The Veiled Guard received a mixed reception, there’s still a chance that the next Mass Effect will return BioWare to its old form. Former studio employee Armando Troisi called for no interference from developers.
Troisi, who worked on the original Mass Effect trilogy and served as lead cinematic designer on Mass Effect 2, said BioWare remains strong at making single-player role-playing games with interactive storytelling, deep combat systems and character development. In his opinion, the studio should go back to the proven formula it used in its heyday and continue to develop it.
Developers point out that BioWare’s vision was once very clear: the team would release a cinematic RPG and gradually refine its formula. However, then the studio had to go through the era of serving the game’s enthusiasm and publisher’s demands. Anthem is one of the most glaring examples of these problems, and The Veilguard was also originally created as a service project before the developers changed directions.
At the same time, Troisi is confident that the new Mass Effect will be in the hands of someone who knows the series first-hand. According to him, there are still a lot of veterans of the original in the game, so he doesn’t see any point in giving them advice – it’s enough to let the team do what they do best.
