Playground Games has completely abandoned random generation when creating NPCs in the new Fable. All characters in the game are created entirely by hand.
Developer Playground Games doesn’t want to leave anything to chance when it comes to Fable’s upcoming return. To this end, role-playing games even treat NPCs meticulously. While this is common practice in the industry, in Fable the development team chose not to use randomly generated elements for non-player characters.
Instead, every character in the game is designed and designed on its own. In doing so, Playground Games wanted to avoid individual elements of a character (such as their job, skills, or appearance) from feeling out of place, making the character feel less believable.
To colleagues from Game Radar+ Director Ralph Fulton said: “We carefully selected every detail of each NPC to create characters that were relatable and fundamentally coherent to the player. Originally, we had a tool that randomly generated NPCs, essentially ‘rolling’ the characters, which would have saved us a lot of work. This would have saved us a lot of time, but we found that the results were not that consistent.”
The world of Fable is as believable as possible and is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 23, 2027.
