Intel previously considered the idea of ​​x86S, but decided in December 2024 to stop developing this architecture alone.

Another feature of this mysterious product is FRED (Flexible Return and Event Delivery) technology, which is designed to handle system events and interrupts. It replaces the old, slow privilege switching mechanism with a new low-latency mechanism. Intel and AMD have joined forces as part of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group (EAG) to standardize FRED, making the solution an industry-wide standard.

In addition, the new chip is also equipped with the APX (Advanced Performance Extensions) system, which is designed to improve core performance. It involves using 32 general purpose registers instead of the previous 16. An extended version of the Intel AMX (Advanced Matrix Extensions) hardware architecture for matrix operations is also mentioned, containing 16 or 32 block registers instead of the standard 8. Generally speaking, this chip is only implemented as 64-bit (PM64 only), with five levels of addressing (PML5 only).

It’s unclear who is behind the processor. There is speculation that it may be a Chinese company Zhaoxin or Haigong. Another version is the new startup RosaicLabs, which has reportedly obtained Intel’s development results in the Atom product field and continues to improve the architecture of these chips. However, Atom-class chips require almost no APX and AMX.
