Diablo V was announced during BlizzCon 2026. The developer didn’t show off any gameplay, but held a Q&A panel and shared various details about the project. Key points they shared about the game:
- About the plot of the game. The main feature of the new project is that the events will unfold in an asylum that has fallen under Diablo’s rule. For the first time in the series, the heroes don’t need to prevent the apocalypse because the world has already been destroyed. According to the developers, the main villain will appear directly in the world and plot for the first time since the beginning of the game.
- About chronology. The developers describe Diablo V as a story that takes place approximately one hundred years after Diablo IV.
- About the status of the shelter. In Diablo V, the world isn’t just in a state of destruction – Diablo continues to actively change it to suit his needs. The developers wanted to show Sanctuary as an unstable place, constantly being rebuilt under the influence of hell. The game will feature a procedurally generated landscape – the location of locations, enemies, territorial features and rewards will all change when the player returns. Blizzard wants players to see how Diablo directly impacts Sanctuary.
- About “Terror Terraforming.” The developers use the term “horror terraforming” to describe this world-changing system. Diavolo and his minions have the ability to warp the surrounding area.
- About the terrible commander. There will be some former people in the world who were turned into so-called fearsome commanders by Diablo. These creatures possess powers comparable to those of Hell’s highest demons.
- About the city. In Diablo V, there will be no familiar cities or permanent safe havens. The developers were particularly keen to move away from the series’ traditional structure, in which players regularly return to one of the cities for trading, crafting and other activities. The main safe spots are not cities but mobile caravans of survivors. It will feature traders and other allies traveling with players through the destroyed sanctuary. According to producer Tiffany Wat, the absence of cities changes the fundamentals of the game – you have to decide how to survive, what powers to use, and what to sacrifice to keep fighting.
- About allies. The caravan will gradually expand with new characters, each with their own story and past. Some familiar characters from previous installments of the series will also appear, such as the Goblin Treasure Soldiers. Blizzard points out that accumulating wealth no longer has the same meaning after Diablo is victorious, so Goblins will be looking for new targets.
- About the hero profession. Three have been confirmed so far – Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight (a new addition to the series). Overall, at the outset they promise more lessons than previous installments in the series.
- About equipment. Blizzard wants to give items more personality, making them clear and memorable enough to be found even after hundreds of hours of play. The developers cited Diablo II as a major source of inspiration.
- About inventory. Item size matters again – large items will take up multiple inventory slots. So, Blizzard is bringing back a more classic gear management system.
- About the usual gameplay elements. Gear sets are returning to Diablo V, with the developers treating them as part of a deeper character creation system. Runes with the spirit of Diablo II will also appear in the game again.
- About the atmosphere of the game. Blizzard calls Diablo V the darkest game in the series. According to the “Diablo V” team, the game will attempt to answer the question: “Who should you be when the world has fallen?”
- About the stages of development. Diablo V is currently in early production, so many of the announced systems may still change before release. The developers decided to announce the game unusually early to consider player reaction during development. Blizzard will start talking about Diablo V more frequently in 2027. The developers promise to showcase the development of the game, new systems and explain the decisions made during production.
