At BlizzCon 2026, developer Blizzard Entertainment revealed extensive plans for the digital trading card game Hearthstone. The most important announcement concerns Spring 2027: the first new playable class since the introduction of the Death Knight in 2022 will arrive in the Tavern in March 2027. With the introduction of the Monks, the next major expansion, Reign of the Dark Empire, will begin on October 20, 2026, which will take the card game ten thousand years into the past of the Old Gods.
The release of the Monk class represents the culmination of a long-term product roadmap. The appearance of Pandaren Brewmaster Chen Sturmbräu in the first trailer hinted at the visual direction of the series, but Blizzard is still keeping specific details of hero abilities or specific card mechanics under wraps. The Monk expands the current roster of eleven classes, joining the ranks for the first time in four years.
The Reign of the Dark Empire set will be released on October 20th and will bring new game mechanics. The new keyword “set” allows two minion cards to be merged into a new unit to specifically combine effects. At the same time, Blizzard is improving the diary system and introducing “journeys” – a narrative framework design that connects missions, achievements and limited-time events throughout the expansion cycle.
The battlefield mode will also be updated in time: on September 22, the development team will launch a new minion type called “Aberration”. The mode will also be expanded to include a permanent 2v2 ranked mode.
Through timely mechanical updates and the long-term introduction of new classes, Blizzard has shown a desire to keep Hearthstone alive beyond the usual three-expansion plan. The interplay of nostalgic themes and functional interface overhauls is designed to bind active tournament players and returners into the ecosystem.
