Let’s remember that The Last of Us Part II was supposed to have an official multiplayer mode, but Naughty Dog ultimately abandoned it and its subsequent online offshoot, The Last of Us Online.
The modding team led by Speclizer developed an unofficial version of The Last of Us Part II multiplayer game in January 2026, regularly reporting progress and planning to release it before the end of September.
As Speclizer reported on his Weibo, The Last of Us II’s multiplayer mod team will have to completely forget about the project instead of premiering it in September. The copyright holder draws attention to this development.
“Unfortunately, I recently received a letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment asking me not to release the mod. It’s incredible that it will never see the light of day.”” Spelizer complained.
It is worth noting that the development of the multiplayer game modifications for “The Last of Us Part II” was partially funded by the Speclizer team through the Patreon service. It certainly doesn’t help that the project is ignored.
The Last of Us Part II was released on PS4 in June 2020, received a remaster on PS5 in January 2024, and on PC in April 2025. The game was a huge success (over 10 million copies sold), but Naughty Dog was in no rush to announce a sequel.
