Yes, but why? : Blizzard gives clear answers to World of Warcraft 2’s creative questions

The developer of World of Warcraft has quashed fans’ hopes of releasing a full sequel, explaining why creating World of Warcraft 2 doesn’t make any practical sense in the current reality.

In an interview with IGN, lead designer Kris Zierhut emphasized that the game has been in continuous development for 25 years: the team continues to improve graphics, optimize rendering, update lighting and redesign the server architecture. According to him, the development of the second part required throwing away the foundations established over decades and starting from scratch.

Project lead Holly Longdale also confirmed the strength of the current codebase, and chief creative officer Chris Metzen previously hinted that the studio was already actively planning to add stories some time after the conclusion of the World Souls saga in the add-on The Last Titan.

In addition, it was announced that “World of Warcraft: Forever” will be launched on November 4, 2026, aiming to meet players’ needs for alternative development of the classic version of the game without completely changing the platform.
