Anti-piracy company Denuvo filed for the first time in a U.S. federal court a claim for bypassing technical protection measures against an anonymous hacker named voices38.
The lawsuit alleges that the defendants circumvented anti-tampering protections in more than two dozen games, including games such as Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Star Wars Desperados and Persona 3 Reloaded. Because Denuvo does not own the copyright to the game itself, the lawsuit is based on DMCA laws, which prohibit bypassing digital locks that protect access to copyrighted content.
With the hacker’s identity still unknown, the company plans to subpoena Reddit, Discord and Valve account information through court, using linked Steam profiles and payment information to remove the suspect’s anonymity.
Despite the seriousness of the accusations and the request for damages through an injunction, voices38 itself has responded to the news online, stating that the entire situation is under control and the event will continue as usual.
