Developer reveals new details about caravans and location changes in Diablo V

Diablo 5 will make Sancutari more static than previous games in the series. Blizzard wanted to show a world that had survived a full-scale apocalypse and found itself under Diablo’s control, and the consequences of his victory would not only be apparent in the plot, but directly apparent when exploring locations.

The next installment in the series will once again transport players to the mortal world of Sanctuary, but this time the usual confrontations between heroes and the forces of Hell are no longer enough to describe what’s going on. Diavolo and his Dread Commanders successfully captured large swaths of territory and then began to rebuild the environment for themselves.

Senior game director Joe Sheley said in an interview Tech Radar GameThe journey across the Western Continent will connect multiple time layers simultaneously. According to him, the developers are actually telling three stories at once: what the world was like before the disaster, how the invasion by Diablo and his commanders came about, and what Sanctuary looks like after the disaster is over.

The final stage will be the starting point for players. Almost nothing of the former civilization remains, and encounters with other survivors are rare. Sometimes, the Wanderer is able to find a person who decides to join his caravan and help him survive on his journey to a destroyed world.

One of the main features of the new game is the system snowstorm It’s called “The Formation of Terror.” Dread Commanders don’t just occupy certain areas – their presence gradually changes the biome itself. The surrounding landscape begins to match the nature and abilities of a specific demonic ruler.

This means that the same area can look completely different over time. If the area is controlled by, for example, a commander associated with the undead, players will encounter corresponding enemies and environmental changes. But when you visit the place again, things may be completely different.

Story director Jennifer Hepler explained that procedural world generation will help with this. Developers can change the state of already familiar places, depending on who established control there and what happened in the area during the hero’s absence.

As a result, areas that were previously filled with zombies and other undead may find themselves reclaimed by humans the next time you visit. Alternatively, humanity loses it again, but has been transferred to the control of another Terror Commander. Then the opponents, atmosphere, and visual appearance of the area itself will change.

With this, Blizzard hopes that even revisiting familiar routes can become potentially new experiences. Not only do players return to already-explored locations on the map, but they once again face the consequences of events that occurred in the world.

But these changes won’t just affect open areas. In Diablo 5, a caravan will appear, which will become a kind of mobile shelter for the protagonist. He was supposed to act as a safe space between the destroyed shelters.

Hepler compared this mechanic to camps in traditional story role-playing games, e.g. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon Age. In this type of game, players can temporarily leave the dangerous world, meet their companions, talk to them and prepare for further journeys.

However, Blizzard doesn’t intend to completely replicate the systems of these projects. The caravan character will not become an official companion for this level dragon age: They will not be able to be detailed equipped, upgraded according to the same principles, or used as standard members of a fire team. Their main characters are different – to be independent characters with their own personalities and stories.

The caravan itself also serves a practical purpose. You can repair and create equipment, replenish potions, and prepare for the next journey. As the story progresses, it should gradually expand: starting out as a small camp, a caravan can turn into a full-fledged gathering place where travelers will be encountered and convinced to join the fight against Diablo.

Therefore, its development will also show the progress of the plot at the same time. The more allies a hero has, the more vivid and meaningful his sanctuary becomes. This should be in stark contrast to the outer world where demonic forces continue to dominate.

Hepler said this contrast is especially important for Diablo 5. Sanctuary will become more dangerous in the new game, so the developers need to provide players with a place where they can take a breath and at least temporarily distract themselves from the constant threat. Caravans should fulfill this function accurately while emphasizing the game’s central themes of constant movement, the instability of the world around them, and the attempt to maintain hope where civilization has been nearly destroyed.

Ultimately, Blizzard is trying to make Diablo 5 more than just an ARPG with new maps, enemies, and loot. The world itself must react to what is happening and change according to the forces that control it. Instead, the caravan becomes a moving stable point that grows as the hero travels.

We’re still a long way from release, so the final look of these systems will likely change. “Diablo 5” is under development and is expected to be released in spring 2029.
