The FBI has shut down the NightmareStresser website, which was used to organize hundreds of thousands of DDoS attacks, causing various network resources to be disabled. The site has been selling access to users who want to launch DDoS attacks since at least 2020, but the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Tuesday that the FBI had seized domains belonging to the service under court authorization.

“According to the seizure order, the NightmareStresser service targeted in this operation has been used to conduct or attempt to conduct hundreds of thousands of DDoS attacks against victims around the world since 2022.”the department said. The website’s main domain now displays a page notifying the FBI about the seizure of resources; in 2022, another domain related to the service was seized and six individuals suspected of organizing dozens of services providing DDoS attacks were charged.
According to Searchlight Cyber, NightmareStresser has more than 566,000 registered users as of 2023. With prices ranging from $25 to $19,999, anyone can launch a DDoS attack – the price is determined by method and intensity. “The most experienced experts in the DDoS field are behind this project; it is the longest-running, most powerful and authoritative platform of its kind. In more than eight years of operation, NightmareStresser has never been offline.”the website says. It markets itself as a stress testing service, but in reality, according to the FBI, it is used “Assaults on victims in Alaska and across the United States”. However, it is possible for NightmareStresser to respawn at a new address.
