The sandbox Garry’s Mod received an update in September that significantly changed the game’s technical underpinnings. The main innovations are 64-bit versions of the client, server, and most development tools (including Hammer), which should reduce the number of crashes on overloaded servers.
Windows clients now use 64-bit memory addressing, so games will rarely encounter the old limitations of 32-bit applications with heavy plug-ins. You can select a new version of the client through the Steam launch options. Meanwhile, a new Hacked Manhacks option has appeared in the NPC creation menu, and the Dropship can now be damaged in the sandbox – its invincibility has been officially revoked.
The developers have also redesigned the Spawnmenu: the content tab now has subcategories, and the system can be used by third-party plug-ins. The menu for selecting player models has also been updated – categories appear, the viewport size has been increased, and the display of characters has become more accurate, conveying their appearance directly in the game. Additionally, Garry’s Mod now supports the indie game Insurgency (2014) as installable content.
On September 17, a patch was released that fixed several issues, including Steamworks crashes, errors with certain plugins on Linux servers, and native 32-bit Linux clients crashing on startup.
