Microsoft has patented technology for managing video game advertising, aiming to make monetizing free-to-play programs and potentially budget subscriptions less of a hassle for players. This system uses the “points time” mechanism and the special signals of the game itself to eliminate the sudden insertion of advertisements in the middle of the game.
According to the patent, after users watch the video, they will receive continuous playback for a certain period of time. When this time is up, the system opens a narrow, temporary “Promotional Content Window” and begins waiting for a prompt from the game (for example, the end of the round or the appearance of a loading screen). If the signal is received on time, the game will be temporarily paused to display ads, and then the session will resume with new points. Early signals are ignored, eliminating unintended interruptions in dynamic moments of the game.
