Google is testing a new way to add content to Discover, the news source on Android smartphones that appears in the company’s proprietary app. We’re talking about the “Dive Deeper” feature, which adds AI-generated comments when a user wants to learn more about a publication’s topic in the feed instead of visiting the source website directly.

Google says the new feature is designed to make it easier for users to explore posts and find relevant content without having to navigate to different web pages. At the same time, the Dive Deeper feature will not direct the user to the publisher’s articles or the pages of the authors of his favorite videos. Instead, it redirects users to a page containing an artificial intelligence-generated summary of the material. This is very similar to how the AI overview feature in the company’s search engine works.
This approach may indicate that Google wants to ensure that users spend less time reading and watching videos on their favorite websites and prefer watching AI-generated content. Currently, the innovation is mainly being tested on film. We expect to test other content display designs and apply Dive Deeper to more content types in the coming weeks.
