Nightdive Studios, a development studio specializing in new releases, released new gameplay footage for Thief: The Dark Plan Remastered during the PC Gaming Show’s Tokyo Direct presentation. The roughly one-and-a-half-minute-long trailer highlights Eternal’s stealth mechanics surrounding protagonist Garrett and explains the basic gameplay principles of using shadows, stealth, and theft. In addition to graphical revisions, the brief focused on optimizations for modern gaming controllers, with a newly integrated radial menu simplifying quick access to equipment such as special arrows and lockpicking kits.
The implementation of the gear wheel solved one of the biggest hurdles in the console conversion of the 1998 PC classic. While Looking Glass Studios’ original version relied heavily on nested keyboard shortcuts, the new radial menu allows for smooth processing without interrupting the flow of the game. Controller customization also supports rumble effects and motion control via the gyro sensor.
The technology foundation is Nightdive’s in-house KEX engine, which enables frame rates up to 120 frames per second at 4K resolution, in addition to higher-resolution textures and revised character models.
In terms of content, the remastered version includes all missions from the main game as well as additional content from the later Gold Edition. As a special extra, the development team has also announced the integration of a separate bonus event called “The Tarnished Mirror.” This is a curated compilation of critically acclaimed community-level titles embedded within the overall structure, prepared for the remaster with the support of the original authors. A digital archive containing historical behind-the-scenes material completes the package.
The release date of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is still scheduled for winter 2026. The game will be released cross-platform on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Through a combination of technological innovation, expanded accessibility and add-on content, Nightdive Studios aims to deliver a groundbreaking, immersive simulation experience for fans of the original consoles and the next generation of consoles.
