Nearly 30 years after the release of Grand Theft Auto 2, the popular game is getting an unexpected and massive visual update. An enthusiast nicknamed gabdeg released a mod based on NVIDIA RTX Remix, which adds a mature path tracing function to the classic GTA 2.
This modification completely changes the game’s lighting system. Now the light from fires, explosions, gunshots, and car headlights dynamically illuminates the world around us. Some objects also have self-illuminating textures added to make the light source look more natural, especially at night. In addition, the author also uses Remix Plus to achieve dynamic changes in time of day.
There are also technological improvements. The mod fixes an issue with the original game’s widescreen monitors: after switching to the 16:9 ratio, cars and passers-by no longer suddenly appear at the edges of the widened image. Pressing the F4 key brings up the RTX Remix menu, where you can adjust the lighting and time of day independently.
