AMD may be changing its strategy for Ryzen Z processors for portable gaming consoles more decisively than expected. According to some information shared by Gotou_3rd and CaptainMcShotgun, the future Ryzen Z3 will be derived from the Medusa Point platform, but with Custom configuration of such devices.
This information has not yet been confirmed, and the configuration may change before the launch. However, the project proposes a different approach compared to previous generations of Ryzen Z. More chips dedicated to graphics processing.
Ryzen Z3 may have 12 CU RDNA4m
Ryzen Z3 will be based on Zen 6 CPU architecture and RDNA4m graphics card variants. The currently listed configuration includes four Zen 6 cores flanked by two low-power Zen 6 cores, for a total of six cores and twelve threads. The Medusa Point in the standard configuration will consist of four Zen 6 cores, four Zen 6c, and two low-power cores.
The most interesting difference, however, is the GPU. Ryzen Z3 should integrate 12 RDNA4m computing units, Compared to the eight CUs associated with a standard Medusa Point configuration. As a result, AMD will reduce the number of CPU cores and allocate more space and energy budget to graphics components, a choice that is in line with the needs of portable gaming consoles where the GPU plays a central role in gaming performance.
C64 Handheld and Spectrum Handheld: Launch delayed by six months due to manufacturing issues
Rumors also indicate Ryzen Z3 optimized for 15Wwhile Ryzen Z3 Extreme should reach around 25 W. It’s unclear whether both versions will use all 12 CUs, or whether AMD will limit the GPU to less powerful models.
Another interesting element involves packaging. The chip is expected to be in the 25×25mm FF6 format, which has already been linked to rumors about Ryzen Z3 and handheld devices. then it will More compact than the FP8 package used by processors such as Strix Pointthe basis of the current Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
The GPU also has a feature. RDNA4m is not a true implementation of RDNA 4, but A derivative of RDNA 3.5 with some next generation compute units Specifically used for matrix operations. According to rumors, this change will allow the introduction of native support for technologies such as FSR 4 and any future AMD solutions. The move to RDNA4m also means AMD seems unwilling to bring RDNA 5 to the next generation of Ryzen Z chips. Currently this architecture only works with Rumors about future PlayStation portable devices.
If this information is confirmed, Ryzen Z3 will bring more significant changes compared to the previous Ryzen Z. While the Z1 and Z2 models will largely be optimized derivatives of existing platforms, the Z3 will likely feature a CPU, GPU and package configuration more specifically developed for the handheld market.
