Sony is also bringing AI upgrades to the base PS5: Introducing Fast Spectral Super Resolution, a lightweight evolution of the PS5 Pro PSSR that improves clarity, stability, and performance for compatible games.
One of the most notable features of the PS5 Pro is that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)an AI upscaler that allows you to get clearer, more stable images starting from a lower internal resolution. In practice, the console can render the scene with a reduced number of pixels, thereby reducing the load on the GPU, while the AI reconstructs the final image. This approach frees up resources that can be reinvested in achieving Higher visual quality and/or performance.
now one “Lightweight” variant of the technology it also appeared PS5 dock: is called Quick Spectral Super-Resolution (QSSR). The first games to support the feature will be Soul of the Rams and Marvel’s Wolverine, with updates released today.
Benefits of QSSR
As explained on the PlayStation Blog , PSSR has been required even on the base PS5, but it’s impossible to implement it: the complexity of its neural network analyzing every pixel is too high for standard console hardware. QSSR was created to overcome this limitation. The new upgrader was developed in partnership with AMD and uses Neural networks redesigned to become lighter, fastersupported by a hand-optimized implementation to take full advantage of the PS5 architecture.
This combination allows for AI upgrades that improve clarity, temporal stability, and detail while maintaining a computational load that is compatible with the base console. Sony notes that PSSR remains the premium solution on PS5 Pro, but QSSR still offers Significant improvement in image quality Available for all PS5 users.
The first batch of games supporting QSSR have been launched, and more games are under development
As mentioned at the beginning, the first games to integrate QSSR are Marvel’s “Wolverine” and “The Soul of the Rams”, both of which were updated today with new dedicated graphics options. Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald said via the PlayStation Blog that QSSR “adds greater clarity and stability at the pixel level,” enhancing complex environments like Madripoor and Shinjuku and providing PS5 players with “Experience the PS5 Pro experience”.
However, Sucker Punch’s Jasmin Patry highlights how QSSR can help you achieve ” A level of clarity and temporal stability previously impossible to achieve on PS5”, improving even the most subtle details of the characters and scenes.
PlayStation Plus: October’s must-have games announced for PS4 and PS5
Obviously we’re just getting started. Sony confirms QSSR will be available for: All PlayStation Studio and many other games This technology will be adopted in the future. The move could help the PS5 remain competitive with new games launching in the coming years as it nears its sixth candle in the final stages of its life cycle.
