In September 2026, Sony quietly released an updated version of the PS5 Slim console, which made a number of changes. The new version significantly improves the base model, but one innovation deserves special attention because it significantly simplifies the repair process. Compared to the motherboard of earlier versions of Sony’s PS5 Slim console, researchers found a number of changes in the modern console.
The layout of the motherboard has changed, and the internal layout of the console has been redesigned and simplified. In theory this would make the service center technician’s job easier.
A replaceable CR2032 battery appears on the motherboard. Interestingly, Sony included the old instructions for the updated PS5 Slim but made no mention of this important change.
The cooling system design and radiator materials were changed. In particular, the contact area between the cooler and the chip has been redesigned to be closer to the cooling method of the PS5 Pro. The new design should better prevent leakage of liquid metal, used here as a thermal interface.
The researchers also noticed a new, optimized, and cheaper implementation of the HDMI retimer.
