Starting from the successful release of “Resident Evil 7”, the famous RE ENGINE engine has served Capcom Studio faithfully for nearly ten years. It powers the latest serialized horror games, cult classic remasters, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter. However, as the years passed and technology advanced, the scale of the game world and the complexity of the mechanics pushed engineers to a technical impasse that could no longer be solved by simply adding new features.
The Japanese company decided to take the wraps off its in-house developed kitchen. The author did not fundamentally abandon common tools in favor of third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 5, nor did he create a project from scratch. Instead, he chose the path of in-depth and smooth development. The name of the initiative is REX (RE next ENGINE).
The project combines a series of new technologies designed to fundamentally optimize all processes. Engineers are redesigning pipelines for processing massive data sets, updating artist and level designer tools, introducing automated testing of builds, and preparing the engine to interact seamlessly with neural network algorithms. While we’re not talking about artificial intelligence putting Resident Evil 9 together from start to finish, Capcom is laying a solid foundation to ensure that its future blockbusters look stunning and run without lag on any level of hardware.
