Thread Director technology has been available in Intel processors since the 12th generation Core. It improves load balancing for hybrid CPUs with different cores, making better use of large and small cores. Recently, Intel released a patch for Thread Director for Linux, which should significantly improve performance.
The patch improves performance in virtualization tasks. It is stated that on a virtual system the update improved the result in 3DMark by an impressive 14%. The figures given are valid for a system with a Core i9-13900K processor.
The focus on gaming performance for Linux may seem strange. But this is important for virtualization and cloud game servers. Intel sees its processors as the best CPUs for gaming, while at the same time trying to improve their results for cloud platforms, which have been gaining popularity lately.
