Many, including Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, believe that live services will collapse in 2024, yet many companies continue to focus on it in hopes of achieving success for several years. According to analyst Mat Piscatella, the macro-genre is still appreciated but is currently monopolized by a few giants.
According to the opinion of the Circana (formerly NPD Group) analyst, the live service it is currently dominated by names like Fortnite, GTA, Minecraft and a few others capable of engulfing the reference market and leaving almost no opening for other productions.
“It’s not that the live service model is rejected by consumers, it’s more that the five-headed monster of Fortnite/Minecraft/Roblox/GTA/COD it is conquering more and more players, time and money. The new live service games are new drinks against Coca-Cola and Pepsi,” Piscatella wrote on X|Twitter.
However, we have recently witnessed the case of Palworld, which at least at its launch achieved success totally beyond expectations. This is simply proof that there may be exceptions, but this does not mean that the aforementioned titles currently have a monopoly in their hands: “Yes, yes, I know, there are other great games too… But the point is that There are well-established live services that act as a black hole and they’re sucking everything out of the market for any new game that tries to break out. Which makes stories like Palworld all the more impressive.” Do you agree with the point of view expressed by Piscatella?
