Although SEGA was focusing a lot on Sonic and wanted to re-establish a tight competition with Nintendo’s Mario series, the Japanese company revealed in its latest financial report that sales of Sonic Superstrars did not meet expectations.
Already the protagonist of a less than exciting debut, Sonic Superstars continued to sell below SEGA’s forecasts. The company shared its financial performance for the nine-month period ending December 2023, revealing that it had revised sales and profit forecasts downwards. This is “primarily due to weak sales” of its new new games. The speech includes Sonic Superstarswhich found “disappointing sales during the Christmas season“.
This marks a downward trend year over year for the Sonic franchise, which sold 6.75 million units during the respective quarter of 2023, up from 5.05 million in the current year. Sonic Superstars, in essence, did not keep up with the extremely satisfactory performances of Sonic Frontiersthe first “open zone” chapter published by SEGA last year.
