The Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer is increasing production of chips using the new 3 nm technology. In 2023, the main customer was Apple, and all production capacity was used to produce Apple A17 Pro chips and M-series processors. This year, TSMC wants to increase production on this process by 80% – from 60 thousand wafers to 100 thousand wafers per month.
TSMC’s customers include Qualcomm, MediaTek, NVIDIA and Intel. Apple also remains a major customer, since the company will need a large batch of A18 processors for the new line of iPhone smartphones by the end of the year. Also this year, new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400 chips based on 3 nm will be released. Therefore, TSMC is seriously increasing its production capabilities and production of chips using second generation 3 nm technology (N3E). The company is also producing another N3B technology, but according to rumors, the cost of chips on this line is still very high. The first customer for chips using N3B technology was Apple with the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips.
According to information from the manufacturer itself, orders for 3nm chips in the second half of last year already accounted for 6% of total sales. This year their share will increase to 14-16%.
