Netflix is investing massively in South Korean cinema and more generally South Korean audiovisual production to appeal to k-drama fans. Many series and films from the Land of the Morning Calm are arriving on the SVOD service in 2024. Among these projects is an adaptation of a cult science fiction manga.
Parasyte, the South Korean Netflix series
Netflix has entrusted one of the most prolific and popular directors in the South Korean film industry with an adaptation project that should speak to readers of Seinen (a manga that targets young adult males). Yeon Sang-ho takes the helm of a spin-off which takes as its setting the universe of the manga Parasyte written and drawn by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The filmmaker notably made his breakthrough in the West thanks to the zombie films Last Train to Busan and Peninsula as well as the fantasy series Hellbound. As a reminder, Parasyte has already been adapted into Live Action. Both parts were released in 2014 then 2015 in cinemas.
Parasyte: The Gray can count on a 100% South Korean cast to bring to life a fantastic story that is inevitably disturbing and gory, like the director’s previous projects. We find in front of the camera Jeon So-nee (Jo Pil-Ho: Breath of Rage) and Lee Jung-hyun (Next Door) and Koo Kyo-hwan with whom Yeon Sang-ho worked on Peninsula in 2020. The first visuals of Parasyte: The Gray can be discovered via a post on X (see below) or in the video presenting the South Korean releases on Netflix in 2024 (between 01m20s – 01m24s). Here is the official synopsis for Parasyte The Grey:
Unidentified life forms take over human hosts and seek to become more powerful. As these parasites begin to disrupt society, a group of humans band together to fight against these evil forces. -Netflix

10 “k-dramas” not to be missed on Netflix in 2024
Netflix sinks millions of US dollars into South Korean productions every year and the results are generally worthy of this investment. In 2024, the SVOD service catalog will welcome several series and films which combine as many genres as actors/actresses and other internationally renowned creatives. Here is a non-exhaustive list of k-dramas and Korean films not to be missed in 2024 on Netflix:
