Based on observations from GamesIndustry for January 2024, the figures indicate that our game consoles will experience a drop in sales this year, across the Channel.
2023 vs 2024 : Fight
Many gamers will remember 2023 as an exceptional year thanks to the strong pace of quality video games. In addition to remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, we were able to get our hands on Hi-Fi Rush, Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, Octopath Traveler II, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate III, Final Fantasy XVI, Armored Core VI, Starfield, Mortal Kombat 1, Forza Motorsport, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Spider Man 2, Alan Wake 2 or even Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora! Whether you’re a fan of RPGs, fighting, adventure or car games, there was something for almost everyone. The year was also, and unfortunately, affected by massive layoffs in the studios. Unity, Take Two, Electronic Arts, Riot Games, 343 Industries, Bethesda, The Coalition, Blizzard, Crystal Dynamics, Bioware, Epic Games, Naughty Dog, THQ Nordic, Striking Distance, Ubisoft, Creative Assembly, Team 17, Telltale Games… more 10,000 developers lost their jobs last year.

Regarding game console sales, the latter were mixed in 2023. The Financial Times, using data collected by Ampere Analysis, reported that although the PlayStation 5 sold like hot cakes, the Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch saw their sales decline. If this might seem normal for Nintendo (which is at the end of the life of its little hybrid), the observation was more worrying for Microsoft. In 2023 and according to the figures given, 22.5 million PS5s would have been sold (an increase of 65% compared to 2022), 16.4 million Switches (down 18% compared to 2022) and 7.6 million Xbox Series X/S (down 15% from 2022). What about 2024? For the moment, some observers believe that the three main manufacturers will see their figures drop in the United Kingdom.
“A year of decline”
We’re going to see a year of drops in console sales in the UK this year, mainly because last year was so big (due to PS5 finally being in stock). In January, Xbox Series S and X sales were down 7%, PS5 sales were down 17% while Nintendo Switch sales were down 31% year-on-year

Christopher Dring, the head of the site dedicated to video game business news, GamesIndustry, predicts a deterioration in console sales. “We’re going to see ‘a year of decline in console sales in the UK this year’, mainly because last year was very strong, due to PS5 stocks finally here”” explains -he. Before adding: “”in January, sales of Xbox Series S and to the other””. We will of course have to wait for the figures from the other territories to know if the trend is confirmed, those from the NPD group (United States) should arrive soon.
