Finding his Origin Story stupid, David Fincher proposed his own version
David Fincher returned to the rejection of Spider-Man in the columns of The Guardians during the promotion of his latest film, The Killer, released on September 3, 2023. The director explains that he even modified the script to propose his own Spider-Man project in 1999. In his new story, he had skipped the entire transformation process of Peter Parker who became a superhero after being bitten by a spider. Instead of that, he wanted to focus on his adult part.
“They weren’t really interested and I understand. They said to me: why would you want to eviscerate the original story? » recalls David Fincher. “ I simply answered them: because it’s stupid “, even if he understands that the character’s debut means a lot to the spectators. “I watched the Origin Story and I thought: a red and blue spider? There are many things I can do in my life and this is not one of them,” he concludes on his meeting with Columbia Pictures.
The first Spider-Man trilogy grossed almost $3 billion
Ultimately, it was Sam Raimi who took over Spider-Man, and even the next two (Spider-Man 2 released in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007). And given the box office of the trilogy, it would have been a great success with almost 3 billion dollars collected in total. Between 2002 and 2007 David Fincher, however, did not stay idle by directing 2 films. The same year as Spider-Man 1, for example, Panic Room was released (rated 3.7/5 on Allociné). For a budget of 48 million dollars, it collected more than 206 million, including 30 million during its first weekend of broadcast. In 2007, the same year as Spider-Man 3, Zodiac was released. Rated 3.8/5 on Allociné, the feature film collected almost 85 million dollars for a budget of 33 million.
