Microsoft emphasizes that this is not a port or anything like that.
Users of the Windows 11 operating system will be able to use the sudo command available in Linux. With sudo, you can run commands from a terminal as an administrator.
Users who have installed Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26052 can try the sudo command. To activate the command, you need to enable sudo in the developer settings section; by default, the command is disabled.
Microsoft emphasizes that sudo for Windows is not a port of the Linux command, but a separate development that simply uses the same name. The company calls the new solution “ergonomic and familiar” for users.
The Windows version of Sudo has three options:
Open a new terminal window running as an administrator, where you can enter additional commands. Open a new terminal window running as an administrator, where you can not enter additional commands. Run a command once as an administrator in the same window – just like in Linux.
In the coming months, Microsoft engineers intend to talk in more detail about the functionality of the Windows version of sudo and expand the documentation for the command. There is no word on when the command will appear in the release version of Windows.
