There is a very clear reason why Microsoft wants to bring some, or even probably all, games from the Xbox Universe to the PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch… Xbox consoles are not sold!
Just ask yourself a very simple question! How many people do you know in your circle of friends or family with an Xbox console? Ok, now ask the same question but change it to “who has a PlayStation 5?”.
The answer is in front of you. Microsoft is unable to sell consoles, and as such, it has to make the most of its recent investment by getting its new projects into the hands of as many players as possible.
Xbox Series S and X… Only 25 million consoles sold!
Microsoft Xbox Series X e Playstation 5
So, in case you weren’t paying attention, Sony announced at the end of 2023 that it had already managed to sell more than 50 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its launch in November 2020. An incredible number, considering that the PS5 suffered a lot with stock problems during at least half of its total life cycle.
At the time, we had several rumors about the sales of Xbox consoles. With some experts claiming that Sony was beating its old rival 3 to 1. In other words, for every Xbox console sold, 3 PS5 consoles were sold. An important ratio, given that there is a “low-cost” version on the Xbox side, while the cheapest console on the Sony side costs €449.
However, the 3 to 1 ratio was an exaggeration. Apparently, things are only close to 2 to 1. In other words, Microsoft appears to have sold between 23 and 25 million Xbox Series S/X consoles since November 2020.
It is a very considerable difference, which is only expected to extend in the coming years. Especially now that Microsoft wants to take its games and services to the other side of the barricade.
