Faced with the recent failures of the MCU, Disney has decided to lower the pace on Marvel films and series; the key is to know if cancellations are to be expected.
‘The Marvels was a failure too much so that Disney decided to significantly reduce the appearance of superheroes in the cinema. As a reminder, the new adventure of Captain Marvel and her new colleagues only grossed 206 million at the box office for a budget of 220 million. It remains to be seen whether this decision takes into account cancellations of upcoming MCU projects.
A considered decision
This information comes straight from Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, announced during the company’s financial report. The boss of the big-eared firm declares that future productions will focus on “franchises and sequels”. He is referring here to the company’s sure values and this is an effect that we can already see with the surprise announcement of Vaiana 2. A decision taken by the CEO following an observation: “Given the current environment and what it costs people to leave their homes to go to the cinema…”. The conclusion is made, streaming has taken over cinemas according to Bob Iger. Faced with this situation, the boss then explained that “The first measure we took was to reduce production, particularly at Marvel”. A reduction which will be seen this year since in 2024, since only one MCU film is dated at the moment, it is Deadpool and Wolverine, which will be released on July 24. A slowdown which can do the greatest good when we know that many fans are disappointed by this new phase of the MCU, but for the moment no cancellation of projects already in progress has been announced.
A lack of interest in superhero films
If 2023 has shown us one thing, it is the general decline in theater attendance in general mentioned by Disney CEO Bob Iger, but especially when a superhero film is broadcast there. Whether it’s Marvel or DC, everyone has had their share of flops. A sad year characterized in particular by the “race” to the bottom of the box office between The Flash and The Marvels, released in June and July respectively. For the battle of sad records between the two rival companies, it is The Flash which wins with 260 million dollars collected at the box office against, as previously mentioned, 206 million for The Marvels, which incidentally becomes the least expensive Marvel film profitable in history. Small victory for DC if we forget that the fastest man in the world potentially caused Warner to lose 200 million. With such low numbers, the break in 2024 for DC will allow James Gunn’s new DCU to start with Superman Legacy in July 2025 and time for Bob Iger to prepare the new MCU sequels.
