What: Amazon Games
February 13th, 2024 at 1:05 p.m. – Amazon is now facing a class action lawsuit because of the new Prime changes regarding advertising during streaming. What is the reason? We explain why exactly Amazon is being sued.
Amazon’s Prime Video was originally a fantastic bargain for users as a streaming platform. After all, many of them secured Prime anyway in order to receive faster deliveries and special offers. Plus, being able to stream series and films free of advertising? Great deal…so far. After Amazon speakers announced in 2023 that Prime Video customers would soon see advertising, the time had come in 2024: advertising in all streams. And that has now become one Class action lawsuit in the USA led.

Class action lawsuit over changes to Prime Video
Users should now pay $2.99 a month to watch Prime series without advertising, as before. But that alone would not encourage a lawsuit. Instead, it’s about the people who had taken out annual subscriptions: their contracts were also changed afterwards, even though they could have expected completely different conditions when they took out the annual subscription.
The class action lawsuit therefore states: “Subscribers now have to pay extra for something they have already paid for.” On top of that, the lawsuit goes so far as to say that Amazon “illegally” profited from advertising Prime Video as an “ad-free” option for years, only to now start running ads. Full details can be found in the official, publicly available court document.

What do the plaintiffs want from Amazon?
The class action lawsuit seeks to obtain at least $5 million in penalties from Amazon (by no means a large amount for the company), but also an injunction requiring Amazon to refrain from engaging in misleading conduct in the future.
The lawsuit focuses on breach of contract, false advertising and unfair competition, among other alleged violations of consumer protection laws, in California and Washington.
Amazon has been sued over Prime before
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had already sued Amazon in 2023. The basis for this was also Prime’s subscription model, but it involved a “manipulative” and “coercive” interface structure that enticed users to sign up for Prime without providing a way to unsubscribe afterwards.
