Koreans don’t like Yoshida Sein.
Rise of the Ronin, the next PlayStation 5 exclusive, will not be released in South Korea. A month and a half before the game’s release, its page on the Korean PS Store disappeared and the promotional campaign was stopped.
Representatives from Sony’s gaming division have confirmed that the Korean release of Rise of the Ronin has been cancelled, both digitally and physically. The company did not give a reason for refusing to release the game at the last minute.
Most likely, notes Eurogamer, the matter is in the recent video about the development of Rise of the Ronin. In the video, one of the video’s heroes, development director Fumuhiko Yasuda, speaks about the Japanese philosopher and politician Yoshida Sein.
Yasuda compares Sein to Socrates and admits that he always wanted to talk about his teachings. Meanwhile, in Korea, Yoshida Sein is associated with the debate about the conquest of the country by Japan, which took place at the end of the 19th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Japan occupied Korea for 35 years. As Eurogamer notes, in modern South Korea, Sein is considered a controversial figure, and the mention of Sein’s teachings in Rise of the Ronin was criticized by Korean players.
Rise of the Ronin will release on PlayStation 5 on March 22.
