The realistic multiplayer shooter Escape from Tarkov recently received a fresh update that excited the player community. The patch brought elements of microtransactions, allowing players to purchase additional player storage space with real money. In the future, even more similar elements will appear in the shooter, but the developers promise not to add mechanics to the game that give an advantage for money.
In a conversation with players on one of the forums, the head of the Battlestate Games studio, operational director Nikita Buyanov, tried to explain the reason for adding microtransactions to Escape from Tarkov. Despite the fact that access to the game requires a pre-order of at least 1,800 rubles, the developers need additional funding to support the game in its 8th year of life.
According to Buyanov, the authors decided to add the ability to donate to the game because “the game has been running for 8 years without any additional costs, you just buy it and play it forever.” There will be other microtransaction elements in the game in the future, but they won’t be too intrusive or give other players an advantage. As Buyanov notes, Escape from Tarkov will not feature in-game currencies, weapons, purchases of equipment packs or boosters that could be purchased for real money.
In addition, the developers will make sure that all donation opportunities can be unlocked without investing real money. For example, additional storage space can also be unlocked through in-game progress by completing certain tasks.
