Between 1996 and 1998 the Spice Girls dominated the charts across Europe with their successes, the English band’s songs are everywhere and the five girls become testimonials for major brands, as well as being the protagonists of a film and a video game, the latter produced by Sony and released exclusively on PlayStation.
Mel B, Mel C, Emma, Geri and Victoria debut in digital version in Spice World on PS1 in 1998 with a music video game developed by Sony Studios Soho and published by Sony Computer Entertainment.
The aim of the game is to perform one or more performances by the group by pressing the keys in time to the notes of songs which were very famous at the time (but still today, in reality) such as WannabeSay You’ll Be There, Who Do You Think You Are, Spice Up Your LifeMove Over, If U Can’t Dance, 2 Become 1 e Naked.
The game comes out a year after PaRappa The Rapper and also takes up the game mechanics of Sony’s Rhythm Game. Spice Worlds was a game designed for fans of the English girl band, created to conquer even those who didn’t usually play video games and for this reason there is also space on the CD interviews with the five girls and other special content.
At the time, the reception given to this “Interactive Music Experience” it wasn’t the best, the same fate befell the less than successful film which to date can boast a Metascore of just over 30 on Metacritic. In the UK, home of the group, Spice World sold just over 70,000 copies and doesn’t seem to have fared any better in other markets.
