If Starfield wasn’t completely convincing and you’re still itching for a space adventure, you’ll get a slightly different alternative in just a few days. We’re talking about Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters, which will be released on Steam on February 19th. This is an open source remake of the classic Star Control 2. The name change comes from the fact that the creators of the first two series offshoots, Paul Reiche and Fred Ford from Toys for Bob, lost the rights years ago.

Despite the advanced age of the original, Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters offers a surprising number of elements that can also be found in modern games like Starfield: space exploration, spaceship battles and customization, a sophisticated sci-fi story, Dialogues and excursions to planets like in Mass Effect. The new edition is intended to stick closely to the original, but expands it with voice acting, 3DO music and other smaller changes. And in contrast to Starfield and Co., Free Stars is completely free.
