If you’ve been following film news in recent months, then you’ve definitely seen the name of Godzilla Minus One, the latest film in the famous franchise, which has attracted a lot of attention. Imagine that it has just been praised by one of the most iconic American directors, namely a certain Steven Spielberg.
Lizard validated
Godzilla Minus One is perhaps the biggest surprise of 2023. However, there have been dozens of projects linked to the famous kaiju since its first appearance in 1954: basically, it is a purely Japanese license, from the Toho studio, but lent to the West and particularly in Hollywood with even recent feature films which introduce the giant lizard into the Monsterverse, alongside King Kong. An upcoming blockbuster, Godzilla
Released at the end of last year in a handful of cinemas, Godzilla Minus One is therefore a Japanese film, paying homage to the first moments of the famous monster by setting its context in the post-World War II era. This is not a Hollywood blockbuster since its budget was less than fifteen million dollars… but having recently exceeded 102 million dollars at the worldwide box office, the film breaks all Toho studio records.
This good deal is not only financial, but also critical since the press unanimously praises the work carried out by director Takashi Yamazaki and his teams: sometimes considered a true masterpiece, Godzilla Minus One does not hesitate to tackle themes that hit the mark, going far beyond the simple destructive spectacle offered by any self-respecting kaiju.
Spielberg approves
Released in cinemas to the general enthusiasm of the public, Godzilla Minus One therefore continues its rise quietly. Recently, it was neither more nor less than Steven Spielberg who praised it: the man behind Indiana Jones, Jaws, Jurassic Park and ET The Extraterrestrial met Takashi Yamazakithe latter not having hesitated to post a photo of the two of them on

In addition, the dad of Godzilla Minus One claims that Spielberg told him a little confidence and not the least: he saw his film three times and loved the different characters! The kind of compliments that many directors would like to receive from such a personality.

We recall that the feature film in question has even just been nominated for the 2024 Oscars in the best visual effects category, a great first for a Godzilla film. It was also during the traditional nominees’ dinner in Los Angeles that Yamazaki and Spielberg met.
