Barely released, Madame Web has been shot down by critics. Yet another failure for Marvel which continues its descent into hell.
Marvel is making comic fans dream less and less with adaptations that are constantly losing quality. Whether on Disney’s side with The Marvels and Ant-Man 3 or on Sony’s side with Venom 2 or Morbius, recent superheroic productions have not had a positive impact on everyone. Since the film was announced, Madame Web has never managed to capture the hearts of the audience. The appointment of Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as the main character didn’t really help things. Despite the presence of actors like Tahar Rahim, the film received very poor reviews. Real turnip or review bombing because of an almost exclusively female casting?

Madame Web, what is it about?
In development since 2022 following the release of Morbius, Madame Web is a feature film directed by SJ Clarkson, who is making his first film here. It tells the story of Cassandra, a young paramedic who develops psychic powers after an unfortunate accident. She will have to learn to use her new abilities allowing her to see the future while helping three young women pursued by Ezekiel Sims. The latter has also received many powers and relentlessly pursues the three women who are supposed to become Spider-Woman in the future.
What does the press think?
You will have understood, the press is very far from being complimentary about the film. Despite a concept which, at first glance, is as interesting as possible, the result is a “bland result”, according to IGN. And despite the good performances of several actors, the media claims that Madame Web is a “waste of talent” and that the tone of the film “lies uncomfortably between psychological thriller and dramatic comedy, but that the jokes and visual humor of the latter hinders the first”. But obviously, the biggest flaw of the film lies in the adaptation of the heroine herself. Indeed, in the comics, Madame Web is a blind and paralyzed old woman who uses her powers to connect to various temporal flows and thus help her allies. But here, the approach is different, and obviously not very well executed. In fact, some are protesting that “the film presents such a fresh take on Cassandra Webb and so many other Marvel characters that it probably shouldn’t be called Madame Web at all.” However, the feature film still has some positive points. Some of the production ideas and camera shots are very striking while the performance of the entire cast is very convincing.
