February 14, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. – Anarchy in the Twitch chat. The social experiment Twitch Plays Pokémon is back. That means: Hundreds of players try to play through Pokémon Red “together”.
In February 2014, the Twitch channel TwitchPlaysPokémon launched a social experiment of sorts. The aim of the experiment was to see whether Twitch viewers could play through a Pokémon game with their input via chat. With dozens of spectators all typing different commands into the chat, chaos was of course inevitable.
For the 10th anniversary, the Twitch chat tries again to see how far they can make it together in Pokémon Red. This time the event is a little different than usual.

For over a day now, you’ve been able to watch as dozens of Twitch chatters try to get the most out of Pokémon battles and lead Ash to glory.
As I said, the red edition from 1996 is played. Instead of an emulator, the game is broadcast to viewers via a CRT television, like the old school way back then.
Die Betreiber des Twitch Channels schreiben zum Jubiläums-Event folgendes: “To celebrate 10 years of Twitch Playing Pokémon, we’ve donned our classic look and are playing a “Super Gauntlet” of games in which we intend to visit every mainline Pokémon region.
After 10 years, we know these regions by heart. This time, we’re playing without emulators. Each run will be played on official Nintendo hardware and displayed on a real CRT TV! Join us as we take a nostalgic look at the Pokémon series throughout the years, as well as experiment with hardware peripherals that some Pokémon games can use.”
As I type these lines, the Twitch chat has been going for a day and a half and has already brought some Pokémon to level 17. As expected, the fights – but also the movement – are very complicated, as there is anarchy in the Twitch chat – some want to play through the game, others want to manipulate the run. Will you take part?
