While few games have finally been confirmed for a specific date this year, the start of the year is often an opportunity to remedy this type of problem for manufacturers. Highly anticipated in recent days, a Nintendo Direct should even have taken place today before being canceled if we are to believe this insider.

Nintendo Direct canceled?
While the year 2023 was perhaps a little too full in terms of video game releases, the year 2024 is lagging a little in filling its calendar. Don’t panic, last year was rather exceptional, and it’s quite common not to know the exact release date of most of the games of the year in February. It is precisely for this reason that the start of the year is generally the time for publishers to make some announcements via their own conferences. Since 2024 began, we have already been able to have news of Microsoft and of Sony. Nintendo, on the other hand, didn’t really show itself. However, it is they who are expected to turn the corner this year. In fact, many players are waiting for news of a possible new console, even if the latter has never been made official by the Japanese firm. While many fans have now abandoned the idea of a Nintendo Direct in February, an insider assures that it should in fact have taken place today… before being postponed.
According to Jeff Grubb, he heard the Nintendo Direct, originally rumored to happen this week, was moved due to the Xbox Update today.

I know no one wants to hear this, but just like when the Queen died, it’s the truth: I heard at the beginning of the week that they (Nintendo, editor’s note.) were talking about postponing the Nintendo Direct to because of the Xbox Business Update.
Jeff Grubb is one of the insiders who generally have fairly reliable information. So, based on what he just said, there should have been a Nintendo Direct today. However, the latter was postponed due to the announcement of Xbox Business Update which should take place this evening at 9 p.m. A situation which reminds him of the moment when the Japanese firm had postponed the date of its Nintendo Direct out of respect for the British who had just lost Queen Elizabeth II on the day the conference was scheduled. From there to saying that Microsoft’s announcements are as important as the Queen of England, there is only one step that we will not take. The reason is, however, entirely credible since such competition would not really be beneficial for either Nintendo or Microsoft who would necessarily lose part of their respective audiences.
The Xbox conference is coming
In case you missed the information, It is this evening that Microsoft should clarify the situation regarding the future of their gaming section. As a reminder, in recent days, many very credible rumors have emerged revealing that games previously exclusive to Xbox and PC could finally be released on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. A desire that would go in the direction of making Xbox Game Pass available on “any screen that can play games”, as Tim Stuart (the financial director of Xbox) said a few months ago.

It’s hard to know in advance what will be announced this evening, or even if the rumors were true. To find out for sure, you will of course have to tune in at 9 p.m. on the Xbox YouTube channel. As a reminder, the most likely games that should be affected to export to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch are currently Hi-Fi Rush, Repentanceand especially Sea of Thieves. The most optimistic even imagine an arrival of Starfield, Gears of War and the brand new Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle which we are still waiting for this year. Either way, there are only a few more hours to wait to sort out the truth from the fiction.
