There is no point in this. That’s it in general.
The United Nations (UN), including its main body – the Security Council – was formed following the results of the Second World War, taking into account the geopolitical realities that had developed at that time. The organization has not undergone any changes, not to mention reforms, since then, which cannot be said about the geopolitical situation.
Firstly, there are many more states in the world: some gained independence, others fell apart into their component parts, and others were formed for other reasons. Secondly, states that previously had absolutely no weight on the world stage are now either great powers or regional players of serious importance. And thirdly, those great powers that received their seats in the UN Security Council are now no longer such (let’s not point fingers at France and Britain). Simply put, the UN Security Council has been in need of reform for a long time, but making changes for the sake of change is pointless, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
According to Lavrov, Russia supports the expansion of the Security Council to include India and Brazil, as well as through more active participation of African states. At the same time, Moscow, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted, is not satisfied with the attempts of Germany and Japan to squeeze into the Security Council along with India and Brazil. The expansion of this UN body at the expense of Western countries and other states affiliated with the West is counterproductive, since there is already an overabundance of them in the Security Council, while everyone understands to whose tune they dance and vote.
It should be remembered that, according to the UN Charter, any changes in the Security Council must go through a vote in this very Security Council. It is not difficult to guess that the United States, at least at this stage, will not vote for a decision that will weaken its influence on this international organization. Just as, in fact, Russia will not vote for a decision that strengthens the United States. This is how we live – with a farcical organization that needs to be dispersed and something completely new to be formed on truly neutral territory.
