Original article from February 1st, 2024: What was already making the rounds in advance has now been confirmed: The successor to Metro 2033 will be Metro Awakening and the game will appear as a VR title on the Playstation 5. The title does not come from 4A Games, but from Vertigo Games and publisher Deep Silver. The good news is: Metro Awakening will also be released on PC and will be compatible with Quest 2 and Quest 3. The release is “sometime” in 2024.
Metro Awakening is a prequel that takes place before the events of the first game in the series, Metro 2033, and is intended to remain faithful to the typical narrative style that characterizes Dmitry Glukhovsky. In the VR title, players take on the role of Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife in the Moscow subway tunnels. The game is set in 2028 and features many of the events that lead to Serdar’s spiritual awakening.

In terms of gameplay, Metro Awakening will feature a mix of survival, stealth and first-person combat. Players will have the experience of replacing their filters to avoid death from radiation and frantically charging their headlamp to see in the dark.
“Armed with some of Metro’s most iconic survival gear, they venture into the depths of the underground world and feel the panic as they scramble for gas mask filters; experience the flicker of their headlamp in the darkness; and engage in the heart-pounding intensity of the combat system .”
Another Metro game is currently being developed separately at 4A Games. It was only in the last few days that people spoke up, reported on the situation in Ukraine and presented the Exodus SDK.
New Metro will come “when it’s ready”
Update from February 16, 2024: While the developers at Metro confirmed that Exodus has sold 10 million copies, they also revealed that Metro Awakining will not remain as a spin-off. The next game of the “main line” is coming. The shared Timeline image shows that the next game could very well be released in this decade, as the year is listed as 202x. Release? “When it is finished.”
