In Russia, for the first time since the late 90s, the demand for desktop computers assembled in electronics stores and small workshops has increased, Izvestia reported, citing a report from a partner of several electronics manufacturers. Such PCs are about 10% cheaper than products from well-known brands, and also allow you to get a system to suit your taste and budget.
According to a report from a partner company of several electronics manufacturers, in 2023, about 20% of desktop PCs (about 260 thousand units) sold in Russia were assembled in a homemade or semi-handicraft way in a store or on the radio market in accordance with customer requirements, often from provided them details. A year earlier, such PCs accounted for 11% of the market.
According to the leading analyst of the Mobile Research Group, Eldar Murtazin, desktop computers from the world’s leading brands have ceased to be supplied to Russia, and through parallel imports there are significantly fewer of them than laptops, so the niche is being taken over by local assemblers, whose products may even turn out to be cheaper. Buyers of such PCs are gamers who need “pumped-up” PCs with certain characteristics, as well as developers working from home, creative people, and small businesses, he added.
According to Avito, in 2023, sales of computers assembled by private individuals increased year-on-year by 66%. The average price of such a PC was 40 thousand rubles. Wildberries reported that the share of such PCs in 2023 increased by 30% year-on-year, with sales of PC components increasing by 40%.
Avito also noted an increase in sales of components. In particular, processors were sold by 10% more than in 2022, cases by 4%, motherboards by 8%, and cooling systems by 5%. The head of the “Business and Economic Services” category, Alexander Semochkin, said that last year the demand for PC assembly services increased 2.5 times year-on-year, and the number of computer assemblers offering their services on the platform increased by 68%.
The risk of purchasing such a computer is that individual components are not always perfectly compatible, which leads to a decrease in the speed of certain operations, warns Content-Review project manager Sergei Polovnikov. Therefore, assembling and fine-tuning a PC often requires the help of professionals, he says.
