Artificial intelligence doesn’t just dominate discussions about exams, coursework or art. The media industry is currently also confronted with financial and even ethical questions about the production of films and series. Corresponding strategies on the part of Square Enix in gaming have already caused heads to shake.
In Hollywood, however, the Marvel series Secret Invasion did not necessarily attract positive attention due to the use of AI. Now a tool is making the rounds that is likely to further fuel such discussions in the future.
Films and series in no time?
Explicitly it is the text-to-video tool Sora. The developer OpenAI is behind the concept, which probably has nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts. The same company recently made a big splash in the media through ChatGPT and, thanks to Sora, was able to grab the headlines again.
The concept is actually quite simple: a text is thrown at the tool from which a more or less usable video is made. AI-generated clips are not a new phenomenon, but the quality of the videos that Sora is currently promoting is certainly causing a stir.
On the tool’s website, you’ll notice a small film that shows a stylish lady walking through the rainy streets of Tokyo. At first or second glance, you might think that these are real photos from the Japanese capital. PC Gamer notes that there are still indications that point to AI.
Another video on the website shows a video of Chinese New Year. The video generated with Sora looks astonishingly realistic when viewed for the first time. But PC Gamer notices little things like people’s strange proportions or their rather wobbly gait.
OpenAI itself particularly advertises the model’s high level of language understanding. According to the company, physics in more complex scenes in particular continues to be a weak point. Effects and effects are also a construction site. A video could be generated in which someone is eating a cookie, but the cookie is still in their hand.
Legally, you are in a difficult situation these days. Deutsche Welle emphasizes that the company, which was co-financed by Microsoft, was already sued by the New York Times because it had used material there for ChatGPT. Discussions about copyright certainly won’t be any easier with Sora.
