While Nvidia is known to offer the best graphics cards for gaming with ray tracing (RT) support, AMD usually wins in the standard rasterization department. This should give the red team an advantage in Helldivers 2 since the game lacks RT effects, but to the surprise of many, this is not the case.
When comparing the frame rates of Helldivers 2 recorded on the GeForce RTX 4080 and Radeon RX 7900 XT, the difference in performance is significant. At best, the red team’s graphics card lags by 31 frames per second at 4K resolution, but at 1080p that gap increases to 56 frames per second. This is according to Notebookcheck, which tested with the aforementioned graphics cards and an Intel Core i9 13900K processor. It is worth noting that testing was carried out in real game conditions, which helped maintain the objectivity of the results.
Even though Helldivers 2 was originally developed for the PlayStation 5, which uses AMD’s RDNA 2 GPU, there’s no clear explanation for why the Radeon RX 7900 XT is so far behind the RTX 4080. It’s anyone’s guess whether there will be optimizations to the game itself or to the AMD drivers. but we can only hope that the performance gap will close with future updates.
