Xiaomi has a new project on its hands that will challenge other big companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek. According to new rumors, the Chinese technology company is developing its own processor for smartphones.
This is not the first time that the company has positioned itself in this market. In fact, the technology company even developed its SoC Surge S1 and placed it in some of its smartphones. However, we never got to see his successor.
ARM is Xiaomi’s partner in this adventure
Now, everything indicates that Xiaomi is determined to invest in the processor market again. This is stated by the CEO of MediaTek, Rick Tsai, as pointed out in a report by Counterpoint Research.
According to the executive, Xiaomi is working with ARM on this project. This means that Xiaomi’s new processor must use cores from the British company, but there is much more to do before putting an SoC on the market.
Xiaomi will still have to find a partner capable of manufacturing this component. Remember, for example, that Apple delegates this task to TSMC, while Qualcomm has already worked with Samsung and TSMC.
According to rumors, Xiaomi only entered this project because Oppo gave up on the development of its processor. The Chinese technology company also collaborated with ARM to develop its own SoC, however, this project ended up being abandoned.
It was in 2022 that the first rumors emerged about the partnership between Oppo and ARM. However, in 2023, the first ended its efforts in this chapter due to the slowdown in the global smartphone market.
With the end of this partnership, ARM found itself available to embrace a new similar project. Apparently, Xiaomi was the chosen partner, although neither company has yet confirmed this collaboration.
As Parv Sharma, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, points out, this is a complex project and there is a tendency for some companies to delegate this process to third parties. In fact, we will see if Xiaomi will be able to develop a SoC capable of competing with the main names on the market.
