The wave of layoffs globally in the gaming sector continues, although in this case the numbers are limited. This time he has to deal with the budget studio ZA/UM, the creators of Disco Elysium, which had to cancel three projects and fire about 25% of its employees.
Disco Elysium: three canceled projects
Let’s be honest, there have never been calm and calm waters in the Studio ZA/UM development team. The launch of Disco Elysium was rather subdued, due to poor investments in marketing and promotion. In fact it was only the shower of awards at The Game Awards of 2019 to give it the right media prominence, whilst remaining truly a niche product. That year, with four statuettes, it was the most awarded game, even beating the overall winner Sekiro (with two awards), and Death Stranding (with three awards).
In fact already in 2022 the three main authors of the game left the studio, while the cultural association linked to the development team was dissolved. And it is news of these hours that in this period three new projects were canceled and approximately 25% of employees were laid off, which in this case corresponds to 24 developers. Among these there would also be Argo Tuulik, the last of the Disco Elysium screenwriters still present in the team.
In particular the “X7” project, which was supposed to be a stand-alone expansion of Disco Elysium, was canceled. Added to this are two other games that the team was interested in making.
