After almost 9 years of waiting, Helldivers is back with a second episode. The opportunity to once again spread democracy across the galaxy. One of the biggest changes between the two titles is the camera, which is now in third person. I’ll explain to you why it’s one of the best choices developers make.
A point of view story:

Helldivers 2 has been available since February 8, 2024 on PC and PS5. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, the title once again invites you to spread democracy across the galaxy and empty your magazine into the faces of alien races, all in cooperation for up to four players. It is also the heir to Helldivers first of the name, released in December 2015. Although the principle remains the same, there is a big change here: the camera. While the first opus offered a view from above, the second opts for a third person perspective. Big fan of the first, I was impatiently awaiting this new episode.
Total immersion in a world invaded by enemies
Sagar Beroshi, co-director of Helldivers 2, returned to this change of camera in the columns of Push Square. He explains that this novelty allows you to feel “more immersed in the experience”. And on this point, the guy is completely right. The feeling of grandeur, whether it was the explosions or the enemies we encountered, made me feel very small. Plus, it’s super satisfying to call in air support and see the missiles from our ship, there in orbit, crash into the surface.

Greater freedom of movement
In addition, the shoulder camera allows greater freedom of movement. Indeed, in Helldivers 1, the “top-down” view required each player to stay glued together so as not to be blocked by the edges of the screen. And during high-level missions, gameplay quickly became complicated without coordination. I no longer even count the number of times I died because of friendly fire, or worse, because of an enemy who killed me without me being able to see him, because he was outside my field of vision. vision. With the camera locked on our character, all his worries are over. If you are on track with your teammates, it is now possible to be more efficient and even achieve several objectives at the same time (missions are limited in time).
I felt like I was in an action movie
Sagar Beroshi also said that this view is about “making you feel like a simple soldier who has been given insane firepower in a crazy totalitarian system.” And that is to say the least. At one point, I found myself having to fight a mini boss on a planet invaded by Terminides (a race of insects). And finding myself face to face with this colossus was truly impressive. I felt like I was in an action movie. Enemies were coming everywhere, tension was omnipresent. Having to reload my heavy machine gun while a giant armored insect was approaching little by little and ultimately sending a volley of bullets at it at the last minute was a really strange experience.
When I faced the Automatons (a kind of robots), the tension was even more palpable. Seeing dozens of enemies falling out of the sky from ships and starting to shoot at me was just scary. My goal was to eliminate 150 enemies on a relatively small map. I can tell you that I have never run so much to dodge lasers, but also missiles. In the end, Helldivers 1 was already an ultra-lively game, but the diving camera sometimes gave the impression of being a little behind the action. In this new title, the fights are even more muscular and you have no other choice but to face death straight in the eye.
