It may not have been rewarded at the major video game ceremonies, but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 still found a few million buyers.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac’s latest installment, has reached a new milestone: Sony announces that its game has now sold 10 million copies. Remember that this is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in a 24-hour period with a record figure of 2.5 million copies in one day, ahead of the juggernaut that is God of War Ragnarok. After a hundred days on the market, Spidey has now reached the nice score of 10 million. For comparison, the very first Marvel’s Spider launched in 2018 sold nine million copies after 80 days on sale before reaching 13.2 million copies after 325 days.
It’s therefore a nice result for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which left empty-handed from the last Game Awards ceremony. Remember that the development of the game also experienced some complications. Indeed a few months earlier, the boss of Insomniac (Ted Price) and their Creative Director (Bryan Intihar) participated in the AIAS Game Maker’s Notebook Podcast in which they stated that the developers did not think they could achieve the quality standards hoped for by both them and Sony. “There was a point in the project where we realized that the second half of the game was… that we weren’t going to make it. We weren’t going to meet the quality standards and the discussions got heated. We were frustrated at not being able to get everything done and Sony confirmed that they were seeing it. I couldn’t hide my emotions during this conversation”, confided Bryan Intihar. With a budget of $315 million, the ambitions between Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the first game were obviously not at all the same.
Sony takes stock
These latest figures shared by Sony are part of a long financial report made official this week in which we learn in particular that “the PS5 will enter the last phase of its life cycle” according to the company which is even forced to review the lowers its sales forecasts for its PlayStation 5. Sony would now like to sell 21 million units of PS5 during the current financial year compared to a previously estimated forecast of 25 million units. However, PS5 sales increased during the third quarter of the box, going from 6.3 million units during the same quarter of the previous year to 8.2 million. But Bloomberg notes that this figure is about a million units lower than previously predicted. Other important news, Sony says it does not expect any major game releases from PlayStation franchises until April 2025 at the earliest, as efforts will be focused on games as a service during the next financial year.
