For the next major update of Windows 11, version 24H2, Microsoft is working on several new features. This also includes innovations that are intended to make using WLAN networks more pleasant. The preview version 25977, published last October, allowed the creation of QR codes that you can use to log into the WLAN. And with version 26052 these can finally be read.
WiFi access via QR code
For this purpose, Microsoft has adapted the camera app integrated into Windows 11. As soon as you open it and hold a corresponding QR code in the image, a corresponding link should be offered in the program. If this is called up, you can connect to the corresponding WLAN – or a mobile hotspot. This means that Microsoft is catching up with smartphones that have had a corresponding function for a long time.

The change is unlikely to bring any advantages for classic desktop PCs, but it will have advantages for notebooks, Windows tablets and handheld consoles. With these devices it will be much easier to access new networks in the future – after all, you don’t have to enter the network key yourself.

However, you will probably have to be patient until the WLAN connection via QR code is possible for all users in Windows 11. The current preview build can be installed now, but pre-release versions are often error-prone. And the feature will probably only appear via the official update channels with the final version of Windows 11 24H2. This, in turn, is not expected until autumn: in 2023 the update was published on October 31st, last year on September 20th.
