According to online sources, the main regulator of the European Union, represented by the European Commission, is preparing to fine the American company Apple €500 million for violating the antimonopoly legislation in force in the region in the field of music streaming. The regulator is expected to announce the fine next month.
The fact that Apple violated EU antitrust laws in the field of music streaming was established during an investigation that began back in 2019. At the time, Spotify blamed Apple for its App Store policies that forced the streaming service to raise monthly subscription prices to cover costs. The fact is that Apple charges a commission of 30% for payments made through its system, which is why third-party developers are forced to increase the cost of the services they provide. In addition, it was found that Apple does not inform users about alternative streaming services, depriving them of the opportunity to use cheaper alternatives.
The European Commission considered that Apple’s actions were anti-competitive and violated the legislation in force in the European Union. The regulator is expected to accuse Apple of using its dominant position in the iOS device segment to impose its terms on competitors. Note that this fine will be the first for Apple in the European Union. Under EU law, the US company could be fined up to 10% of annual turnover.
