The system can be installed, but it will not work.
Enthusiasts were unable to get the Windows 11 operating system with the 24H2 update to work on older processors. With this update, the OS has an additional hardware requirement: the processor must support the POPCNT instruction.
Windows 11 already has several connections to specific PC capabilities: for example, the system needs a TPM cryptoprocessor. These requirements can be circumvented in one way or another, but so far we have not been able to come up with anything with POPCNT.
As researcher TheBobPony writes, at best he managed to install the operating system. Although Windows 11 agreed to be installed on a system with a processor without POPCNT support, the operating system did not work.
According to the researcher, when booting on an old processor, Windows 11 24H2 simply freezes at the operating system logo. You can bypass the need for POPCNT during installation using the /product server command; it does not help with starting the OS.
Probably, nothing will change by the release of the update (version 24H2 is currently being tested). In this case, Windows 11 will be able to run on AMD processors starting with the Phenom II and Intel processors starting with the Nehalem architecture.
The POPCNT instruction allows you to count the number of ones in a binary number. It is assumed that the use of this instruction in Windows 11 is associated with the introduction of neural networks into the OS: POPCNT can be used in AI-related calculations.
The 24H2 update for Windows 11 will be released towards the end of 2024.
